If you are sending your documents to a country that is part of the Hague Apostille Convention, an Apostille certificate is used as proof of authenticity among the member nations. Hague Convention countries have agreed on a more simplified legalization process to execute international transactions. The process for Embassy Legalization is dependent on the type of document and specific requirements of the destination country.
- Government Documents issued by a Federal, State or Local government:
The Apostille process includes processing your documents with the U.S. Department of State Authentications Division in Washington, D.C. Please note, for personal documents like birth, marriage, death and divorce certificates, the document must be Apostilled with the Secretary of State in the State where your document was originally issued.
- General Documents documents not issued by a Federal, State or Local government:
The Apostille process for this type of document includes having your document notarized by a local Notary Public and then certified by the Secretary of State in the State where your document originated.
